It is always an honor to chair a meeting of recovering people- and it is not my intention to make this forum a wharf rats forum- there are places on the internet for us. But if there are any wharf rats here who would like to ID I would be happy to here from you and we can have a chat off-line or at a wharf rat on-line meeting.

My name was LiamFinnegan and I AM still a Wharf Rat. If I can help anyone stay sober at their next show of any kind I would be more than happy to do so.

For those who are not wharf rats- feel free to chime in about your experience with wharf rats at shows, ask questions, make derogatory comments- I especially love those. However, if you think you might want to try a show sober- or are newly sober and have tickets for a gig coming up- there are ways to hook up.

My first sober show was 7-7-89- one reason I love that Blow Away and Scarlet-Fire so much- probably attended another 3 dozen shows before tying the knot on this last incarnation. And that event had nothing to do with happiness in sobriety- I was perfectly happy the day I passed on- I just knew it was time- there was nothing more for me in that incarnation- but those 16-17 years were the best in my life for sure- And for those who may never have experienced the GD completely straight- you truly missed out on something you should have tried at least once.

So 16 years.....Does anyone have 15,14,13,12,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, 9 months, 6 months, 3 months, 1 month, just for today?

I will come forward. I have been sober for over 20 years. I didn't get the Dead until I heard "The Other One" while in a halfway house back in 1981. I got "on the bus" sober. I have had some slips, but all the shows I have gone were done sober. I have been helping other in the recovery program and they can't believe this. I have gone to Wharf rat meetings at shows in Worester, Alpine Valley and Oakland.

I went to 5 of the 6 1991 Boston Garden shows with a "wharf rat" and had a wonderful time. My hat is off to both of you gentlemen and wish you the best. I saw the struggles my friend went through and saw that it was indeed "one day at a time" for her.

A cup of coffee in the morning, maybe a bit of china-rider from europe 72, some jack straw, you do not need drugs to enjoy this music - drugs are a mask you wear and when the masquered is over the music still stands - put it this way - I always liked the dead best in the daytime - sure it grooves better when your stoned but so does Jeopardy.

The real test is how do the words relate to your life. They have meaning in melody, and melody paints a portrait of your soul....

It's stories like yours that put idiot critics like Dave Marsh (see other thread here titled "funny things they've said about the Dead") in their place.

The music is what matters, and it's magical. It can be enjoyed just as well sober as under the influence. The Wharf Rats are an inspiration, and thanks for telling us your story.

i am cured too!!!! glad someone else has found the way too.

oh wait a sec - i thought i had a ginger ale in front of me, but the can says Mich Ultra?? what's up with that?? i'm not entirely sure this counts as a cure i guess. guess its just time to continue my 12oz weight lifting program (hey, i guess that is something - excersise in any form is good)

Nothing against the Wharf rats, but put some Black seal black Bermuda rum in that Ginger Ale Direwolf and call me in the morning. Sorry sober ones.

man ive had Black Seal Burmuda Rum straight before - that stuff is delicious. never had it with ginger ale though - will try it soon. that stuff is yummy - good call :)

We went to Bermuda during a spring break in college and drank it straight and with someting called ginger beer, which, when mixed with Black Seal is called a dark and stormy. Now a friend from college is a rep for them (can you say a kid in a candy store?!)If you have Vernors Ginger Ale in your area, try that. The good old fashioned dark ginger ales taste best in my opinion, although I'll mix it with Sprite too if I'm in a pinch.

nice subject iwas at phil & friends frost 2002 and was convicted by the spirit by the table inside and been sober ever since many thanx wharfrats sadly i waited till 12/19/2004 for my first sober show and it was like being reborn i've never been into the more than i am today even when jer was still around anyway many thanx and keep comin back

it's a stuggle but i try to stay sober between hits...or even straight till i'm not. Ahhh...words!
baby steps...THE first time i saw/noticed a Wharf Rat table was at a NYShow at the Henry J.Kaisar, I had no idea as i offered a big fat burning spliff to the guy sitting behind the table(after all i'd helped myself to some candy) was i ever embarrrassed! He was cool and declined and pointed out some literature(DUH!).
Still not sure about the baptised in the wholly Spirit, but if it works, i'm sure it's reflected in your posts, Liam. I see the power of God in many strange places and outside of difinitions even. Amen & Awoman too.
